Overview

Understanding that Covid-19 is mostly airborne is crucial but has not been stressed enough in the media and the public. In fact, aerosols tinier than 5 microns are the great carriers of Covid-19 virus, and this is the main way that people inhale the virus, get infected and spread the disease, resulting in clusters of infection and in public places creating an endless vicious cycle. “Stop Airborne: Airborne crises can be stopped by wearing quality respirators” is a campaign under Socialgiver’s Thailand Recovery Fund in collaboration with Thailand Post to distribute good quality respirator to everyone.

Remarks: 1 person is allowed to register to get 1 set of free respirator (10 pieces).

Problem

Mission of Thailand Recovery Fund Phase 2

“Stop Airborne: Airborne crises can be stopped by wearing quality respirators” is a campaign under Socialgiver’s Thailand Recovery Fund in collaboration with Thailand Post to distribute good quality respirator to everyone.

“Quality respirators” are a key part of the arsenal to stop the spread of Covid-19. However, quality respirators that can filter the aerosols smaller than 5 microns in size are not a popular choice among people yet. A lot of people are depending on surgical masks or cloth masks.

Surgical masks have an average filtration efficiency of 50.50% while the range of available cloth masks have an average filtration efficiency of 39.10%. Substandard respirators including N95 and KF94 models pervasive in the market have an average filtration efficiency of 72.21% instead of 94-99% according to their standards. As a result, users still have greater exposure to Covid-19 virosols when they are in risk areas shared by Covid-infected people.

Thailand Recovery Fund Phase 1

Thailand Recovery Fund was founded to provide effective solutions during times of crisis, emergencies, and natural disasters. Established during the COVID crisis, we have worked to provide immediate response to outbreaks, educate the public, and provide effective solutions to address the crisis.

Our current focus is to reduce the spread of COVID through distribution of Rapid Antigen Test Kits (ATKs) to low-income, high-risk communities across Bangkok. For this project, Socialgiver is working in collaboration with Rama Hospital (Mahidol University), Department of Medical services (Ministry of Health), Yuvabadhana Foundation, Covid Relief Bangkok, Thai Care, Nat Aniporn Potter (Miss Universe Thailand 2015), and Zero Covid Thailand.

Hospitals across Thailand have been operating over capacity for many months, both in receiving the high number of cases as well as in testing for COVID. RT PCR, although highly sensitive, requires potentially infectious people to travel to testing sites, wait in line, and takes 1-2 days to return results, leading to further spread of COVID through increased contact with other high-risk individuals.

On the contrary, testing via an Antigen Test Kit (ATK) can be done by everyone at home with the potential to test more frequently than the PCR test due to much cheaper cost. This means that ATK testing can be mixed into people’s daily lifestyle, but another underlying reason is that ATKs only show test results as positive only when an infected person is contagious. Another key advantage is the rapid results, which helps people identify risks quickly, limiting spread even faster.

A Harvard study revealed that widespread twice-weekly testing with a rapid but less sensitive test reduced the degree of infectiousness, or R0 (“R naught”), of the virus by 80%, while twice-weekly testing with a more sensitive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, which takes up to 48 hours to return results, reduced infectiousness by only 58%. Rapid testing with ATK reduces infectiousness better than the slower, more sensitive PCR test.

The added benefit of at-home ATK testing is to limit further spread from traveling to/from and waiting at testing sites, as well as reducing the workload on healthcare professionals during this ongoing crisis in Thailand. According to how Slovakia deployed countrywide testing, if we can isolate infected individuals from the community by testing 2 times within a week, COVID spread was cut around 70%.

About Thailand Recovery Fund Phase 1

Thailand Recovery Fund recognizes the importance of providing access to cheap (and/or free) ATKs to solve the crisis at the source by limiting spread. We believe that preventing spread is the most important, most effective strategy to combat this crisis, which would lead to better health and economic outcomes for the entire country.

Our project therefore aims to achieve the following objectives:

To distribute free ATKs to 40,000 persons
To monitor the results of ATKs in real environments to measure its effectiveness in reducing COVID spread in Thai communities
To campaign for the government to recognize the importance and effectiveness of weekly testing, and propose suitable strategies to fight COVID
To facilitate importing, distribution, and sale of affordable but effective ATKs

Thailand Recovery Fund is currently fundraising to purchase and distribute 200,000 ATKs to low-income high-risk communities.

In addition, the results of this donation will be monitored by a team of researchers in a study titled “The impact of SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Antigen Testing Kit screening in the Bangkok community to prevent outbreaks” with around 10 communities receiving 8 kits each for twice-weekly testing and 30 communities receiving 4 kits each for weekly testing. This research project will be supervised by 5 researchers including:

A record system for this research is being conducted by Thai Care (www.thai.care) who will collect data and results of this study over a period of 2 months.

Result from the previous stage

Thailand Recovery Fund has donated KN95 masks and PPEs to medical centers in Bangkok and other provinces all over Thailand to support doctors and nurses who work with Covid-19 patients.

Distrubution has been made to 82 medical centers in 32 provinces in Thailand.

It’s been 2 years since the Covid-19 outbreak, and the number of the infections in Thailand continues to grow. At the same time, the virus mutates into strains that attack the body more severely or are more contagious. Meanwhile, understanding that Covid is mostly airborne is crucial but has not been stressed enough in the media and the public. In fact, aerosols tinier than 5 microns are the great carriers of Covid-19 virus, and this is the main way that people inhale the virus, get infected and spread the disease.

The STOP AIRBORNE project was initiated by Socialgiver and partners such as Thailand Post, who see the clear need for promoting the correct use of respirators as well as the selection of quality respirators. The respirators provided in the project are designed to be able to filter at least 98% of aerosol particles as tiny as 0.1 micron when fit tight. The respirators have also been tested in reliable labs. These respirators are made in Thailand and tested for quality. This project in a way is supporting the production and producers or quality respirators in the country, instead of importing respirators that risk being substandard.

Update: July 2022

Previously, Thailand Recovery Fund mainly provided 200,000 ATK saliva tests for the vulnerable, low income groups in the rural communities in Mae Hong Son.

As the pandemic situation in Thailand has become less intimidating with the majority of people receiving vaccinations, we decided to shift to preventing airborne transmission by providing respirators instead of avoiding the illness. Creating a change in mindset that we can live with Covid, we want to create a gradual back-to-normal lifestyle, just with the addition of wearing masks so those who are not eligible to receive vaccinations can remain safe.

Update 17 : January 2022

Covid-19 is still with us even most of people are vaccinated. One way to decrease the spread of infection is to test frequently. Saliva ATK test allows everyone to take the test at home in just 15 minutes and eliminate the chance to go to the public if they tested positive.

Thailand Recovery Fund and Zero Covid Thailand collaborated to fundraise to buy 200,000 Saliva ATK for low-income communities in Mae Hong Sorn province.

Once the ATKs were delivered and handed to the communities, they tested right away to make sure that they eliminate the of the spread. It turned out that there were a lot of positive cases all over the communities more than expected. The provincial public health needed to handle and run the test to whom hasn’t got tested including re-test for the positive cases in order to rapidly confirm the result.

Update 16 : August 2021

During the pandemic, people are trying their best to put aside protection equipment such as masks , hand sanitizers and rapid antigen test kits so that they could be safe from the disease. But ,sadly, not every person can access this security due to their financial status. Resulting from this, the spreading of the outbreak has turned from bad to worse especially among the poor area. The assistance provided by the government is not sufficient so many public sectors decided to give these tragic communities a hand. Thailand Recovery Fund Emergency is also one of them. Moreover, we have collaborated with Nat Aniporn, Miss Thailand Universe 2015.

Nat believes that “The help cannot be waited. The outbreak does not affect only the patient. But it also affects the healthcare workers as well. Their tasks are becoming more complicated ”

Owing to Nat’s background of working in societal issues, Nat can perfectly work within this field . She is able to raise the fund, supply the essential items and pull together with the leader of NHA Pathum Thani or Phahon Yothin km.44 community. At the present time, the community has a proper and convenient system when it comes to delivering food or helping the villagers who are in isolation.

Thailand Recovery Fund Emergency Update

With thousands of new infections spreading across Thailand, and hundreds of thousands of potential contacts, we’re heading into another crisis. With rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases in Thailand, the healthcare system is on the verge of collapse. One of the most dangerous places to go right now is testing sites, and for those who suspect they have Covid-19, or have had contact, it’s unavoidable. Fortunately, yesterday Thailand has opened up the possibility of personal rapid testing. This also help lighten the load on the healthcare workers, as well as prevent further infection via testing sites.

Thailand Recovery Fund believes this urgent situation needs to be addressed immediately with low cost (but effective) personal test kits to ensure those with Covid-19 limit spreading the virus further, and to keep those who are not yet infected safe. Therefore, the next batch of funding we raise will go towards purchasing and distributing SARS-CoV Rapid Antigen Tests in the most high risk areas.

Details of the tests we’ll purchase are subject to change as we try to push for approval of the most effective solutions. With Thai FDA approval and enough donation volume, each test could potentially cost less than 50 THB.

Update 14: 12 July 2021

Thailand Recovery Fund has donated KN95 masks and PPEs to medical centers in Bangkok and other provinces all over Thailand to support doctors and nurses who work with Covid-19 patients.

Distrubution has been made to 82 medical centers in 32 provinces in Thailand.

On Friday 11 June, SOS EARTH and Socialgiver team went to donate 200,000 THB fund received from LOVE 4 AIR EMERGENCY project to Ratchaphiphat Hospital to support patients who have been suffering from respiratory problems affected by COVID-19.

We are delighted to meet Doctor Phuritat Saengthongpanichakul, Deputy Director of Medical Department of Ratchaphiphat Hostpital to discuss about the current situation of increasing numbers of contagious patients in Bang Khae District. Ratchaphiphat Hostpital also has field hostpitals under their supervision which represent their will to internally manage and work effectively to treat all patients.

During February 20201 in Samut Sakhon, the number of COVID-19 patients continuously increased, causing a shortage in masks. Therefore, the Socialgiver team immediately sent 750 additional pieces of KN95 hygiene masks to Samut Sakhon Hospital.
