Overview

Covid-19 is more likely to spread among low income communities due to high reliance on daily wages that makes social distancing impossible. Covid Relief Bangkok provides Covid-19 survival kits (masks, ATKs, food) to support in-house quarantine and to ease spread among low income households. Every 300 THB donated will go to support 1 low income family.

Problem

Low income families relying on daily wages during the pandemic are highly susceptible to catching Covid-19 due to impossibility of social distancing. Among them, young children, elders or individuals in the eight congenital illnesses are more prone to get severe symptoms but have limited access to proper medical care.

Covid Relief Bangkok Mission

Covid Relief Bangkok provides Covid-19 survival kits (masks, ATKs, food) to low income, unregistered, or migrant individuals to encourage social distancing between their communities.

Formed by SATI foundation, Scholars of Sustenance, and Urban Studies Lab with support from Bangkok 1899 and Thai Health Volunteers Foundation, Covid Relief Bangkok has distributed at least 1 million meals to underprivileged households and helped facilitate proper medical attention.

Update 19: June 2022

We continued to provide survival kits (living necessities) for Covid patients who fall into the vulnerable group, consisting of low-incomers, elders, small children, disabled individuals, pregnant women, and patients with 1 in 8 congenital illnesses. With 340 volunteers, we were also able to deliver a total of 1 million meals to patients, but we want to remind you that our huge number of deliveries all came from the donations we received.

The government has deemed Covid to be endemic, which means that we finally have to put this program to conclusion. However, we have an upcoming spin-off plan to develop an application that can track Covid patients in which we are collaborating with Urban Studies Lab and Scholar of Sustenance.

Update 18: 2022

Everyone is trying their best to prevent themselves and loved ones from Covid-19 by using surgical mask, get vaccinated and frequently tested. But there are young students in rural schools who couldn’t get their hands on ATK because of the price of the ATK is quite high comparing to the minimum wage. And not everyone can access to the ATK seller easily like in the big city.

Covid Relief Bangkok who has always supported low-income communities donated 4,500 ATKs to students and teachers in 45 schools in Mae Tang, Mae Rim, Samerng and Prao in Chiang Mai at the beginning of March.

Everyone could decrease the spread of Covid-19 in the community by testing frequently. We hope that saliva ATK will guarantee the safeness of young students who are looking forward to go back to school to meet their classmates.

Update 17: 10 September 2021

Due to the World Suicide Prevention Day, the Psychological First Aid classes were run for the community’s health volunteers in Bung Kum district. These classes were led by Sanju Amorn Sachamuneewongse. The volunteers are instructed on the proper way to deal with a community member who is in distress and needs mental support. Moreover, we also sent help to the 285 families who are in the isolation centers.

Update 16: 5 September 2021

Good news for these weeks is that many of the visited communities have implemented our protocol. Hence, they can handle the outbreak and there are more recoveries than infections. Moreover,a number of people including the migrant workers are getting their vaccination. For the economy, some construction camps are back at work. Workers are able to gain their wage even though it is below the minimum rate. Nonetheless, Covid Relief Bangkok did not stop providing them with help. We have reached out to 2,200 families living in multiple districts namely Mosque at Saphan Sung, Sam Yak Khlong Lo Lae, Lo Lae Sai Klang and the Cambodian communities in Iyara market at Thep Kunchon. We also collaborated with Zero C Thailand in giving out the antigen tests to communities to help curb the outbreak.

Update 15: 8 – 22 August 2021

This week we reached out to people living in the area of Bang Na to Bang Kum. We distributed food supplies to 1250 low income families including the migrant workers who are unemployed and the people who are in isolation. Unfortunately, we were informed that one of the family members had committed suicide for the reason of “Covid”. It would be an understatement to call Covid infection a stressful situation. This tragedy shows that it is significant to be mindful of the stress and anxiety both at ourselves and others. As a result, in the following weeks, we will run a psychological first aid workshop for the health volunteers within this community so that they will be able to handle such situations later.

Update 14: 1 August 2021

A little while back, Covid Relief Bangkok project received a donation of 7,200 pieces of N95 mask from the Zero Covid Thailand project. This donation is really helpful to us as ,according to the global specialists, the new delta variant can be transmitted via the air. We later distributed these masks to the medical staff and volunteers in Sai Mai , one of the hardest hit districts. We also demonstrated to them the proper way of handling the N95 mask and how to prevent the transmission. Besides, we also delivered essential distribution like 2000 bags of rice, freshfood, sanitary ,kid supplies to 1830 low income and migrant worker families

Update 13: 31 July 2021

During the 20th july to 31th july, the number of infected covid cases is still at their peak and keeps on rising. Covid Relief Bangkok project received so many calls from the construction camps and low income communities as they are struggling from not being able to work and to leave their house to find living supplies. Recently we have provided support in terms of dried and fresh food, sanitary supplies , masks, and other needed items to 6 closed off migrant worker camps in Punnawithi , Makkasan and approximately 500 low income families in Onnut.

Update 12: 17 July 2021

We distributed supplies to 3 migrant worker construction camps this past week. Most camps have Covid cases and are separating infected and non infected. The camps We’ve seen also always have children so we will be purchasing children’s milk and diapers as well to support them. Due to the closure of camps they are not able to go out and get food and also do not have money to buy supplies. In my opinion their needs be more pressure put on the government and businesses to support their migrant staff. This is an issue I’ve seen since the beginning of Covid. To be fair this is not occurring in all factories or construction sites. I have spoken to places that have taken care of their migrant staff but it should be a must. We will be increasing our efforts in the next couple of weeks to support closed off migrant worker camps. We’ve received a list of around 10 camps and have contacted them to coordinate supplies and we will keep updating the list as needed. We’ve consistently kept up with our weekly distribution for the most vulnerable communities. The overall mood is not bright, as you would expect but more and more people are getting vaccinated and are understanding the importance of this. Update 9: 5 June 2021

This week we distributed to 1600 families. Low income and migrant workers. Our distribution was mainly focused on emergency cases. Communities who have Covid infected individuals and have to quarantine causing them not to be able to work or go out to buy food.

The process from the info we were able to gather from health volunteers is individuals infected who are asymptotic or have minor symptoms have to spend part of their time in field hospitals followed by home quarantine. Although these are important health measures you can imagine what an effect this has on daily wage earners. One of the call for helps that we received literally said “we have families who are starving”.

This week we distributed to 1300 families in the Minburi area plus 20 migrant worker families. It’s not much but we hope the extra meals can help these struggling families in their time of need. We continue to collect data and info from health volunteers and community leaders. Everyone’s with the same understanding of the importance of getting vaccinated eventhough continued confusion exists on how to register. Update 7: 21 May 2021

Our Thursday drop off this week was to 3 communities in 2 different districts Dusit and Bueng Kum. 600 families 6900 meals. We have increased our weekly distribution to approximately 1000 families a week. I’d also like to take this opportunity to give much deserved thanks to Scott Chang and Ford Thailand! Since last year they have let us borrow cars for distribution and Scott himself has been to every single drop off and has done most of the heavy lifting. From experience it’s rare to find a company that does so much quietly. Thanks for the support and thanks for making us look like the coolest volunteers ever!

Update 4: 7 May 2021

500 bags of rice and 2000 cans of fish distributed to Health Center 61 in Sai Mai to support 500 low income families. We were informed by the health center that there are an increasing number of infected in the area. 3 hotels have been set up was field hospitals. This area is densely populated with daily wage workers and elderly. They expressed their concern for individuals who have to leave their homes on a daily basis to work as street vendors. Another concern is that there are many people in their care that are not able to leave their homes either due to safety or self quarantine and are not able to get food and supplies. Update 1: 29 April 2021

Today we did a drop off for 3 low income communities 400 families in Chong Nonsi. The vibe was much different from last year. Everyone was much more weary on both sides. Our drop off was in 3 open areas spots where the communities could safely disperse supplies. Driving through the communities there’s a similar theme. Under bridges, behind factories, abandon buildings, and tight spaces. It was difficult not to talk to the the people in the communities in person and to ask if they are ok. I can’t help but feel that more needs to be done but I’m not sure what right now. We will continue to do what little we can and more if possible.
