About

Tong Rod Project by Up for Thai is a collaborative effort by volunteer groups and private sector to provide COVID-19 relief and essential helps to affected communities all around Bangkok. This initiative is led by Duangrit Boonnak and Chalermchatri Yokol with support from several public figures such as Sombat Tirasaroch and Sukit Charoenmookayanun.

Tong Rod Project by Up for Thai has established a donation center as a drop-off point for donation items which include fresh produces and raw ingredients, groceries, drinking water, and funds. A central kitchen has been set up to cook fresh food for at least 2,000 people per meal, 3 meals a day. Freshly-cooked food along with drinking water and essential items are distributed to communities with COVID-19 patients and people in self-isolation. As the situation become more serious, this effort, since May 2021, has been expanded by setting up the 2nd kitchen in Sukhumvit 39. The 3rd kitchen will be open in Changwattana.

The Issues

Currently the COVID-19 infection has spread to all over Bangkok, increasing new clusters with high number of affected people.

From the latest survey result as of May 4, 2021 by the Department of Social Development and Welfare, it is found that there are 680 high-density communities in Bangkok, many of which have been infected. A large number of people have been exposed to high risks and need self-isolation to curb the infection. They have lost their jobs and/or income to support their families, making it difficult to live and sustain during challenging time. The affected groups are classified as follows:

1. People who are in close contact with COVID-19 patients and need home isolation.
2. People with low or no risk of infection who live in the infected communities, are unemployed, or barred from going to work.
3. Non-Thai unskilled workers in the infected area who do not have access to healthcare, and/or lack medical aids.
4. COVID-19 patients in field hospitals and community isolation centers.

These groups of people are in desperate need for basic food and supplies. Although getting some help from public and private services, such support is still in great demand.

How will your donation create impact?

The donation will help support day-to-day activites for people, COVID-19 patients, vulnerable groups, bed-ridden patients, pregnant women and small children, those waiting for their test results, COVID-19 patients waiting for hospital beds, people with high exposure to COVID-19 who cannot go to work, lose their jobs or income, more than 125 affected communities in 23 districts in Bangkok and 2 districts in Bangkok vicinity, 142 construction camps (approximately 14,600 affected people), 24 field hospitals, 14 community isolation centers, and other affected areas by reducing people’s mobility, reducing the risk of getting and speading the virus.
