We hand-picked a new generation of Thais (with a minimum of bachelor’s degree) to join in the Leadership Development Program as change-makers – where they are committed to 2 years teaching and inspiring local communities throughout Thailand.

The means of devising the exact money needed per donation is based on a previous activity’s expense: Londo’s 2 camp (one day trip) was 30,000 THB and the average number of students per class was 40 students. Thus, the estimated impact from a Teach for Thailand fellow’s project is: 30,000/40 = 750 baht per student.

เพราะปัญหาของเด็กไทยในปัจจุบันไม่ใช่เรื่องเนื้อหาความรู้ แต่คือความรักในการเรียนรู้ การมองอุปสรรคเป็นโอกาสเรียนรู้ การให้คุณค่ากับความพยายาม และการเชื่อมั่นในการพัฒนาศักยภาพตน ซึ่งเด็กๆ จะมีคุณลักษณะนี้เกิดขึ้นได้หากมี “กรอบความคิดแบบเติบโต” (Growth mindset)

ค่าย Long Dos ครั้งที่ผ่านมาเกิดขึ้นจากความริเริ่มของครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลง ทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ และ Growth Mindset ที่เพิ่มขึ้นถึงร้อยละ 90 % ของเด็กๆ ได้จุดประกายความเป็นไปได้และเป็นที่มาของการเปิดค่าย “ฝึกอบรมพัฒนาความคิดแบบเติบโต 2” หรือ Long Dos 2 ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นจากพลังความร่วมมือของครูทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ รุ่น 2 และ 3 จำนวน 19 คน ที่ตั้งใจส่งเสริมให้เด็กๆ มี Growth Mindset สามารถหาวิธีจัดการกับอุปสรรค รวมทั้งให้นักเรียนรู้จักตนเองมากขึ้นผ่านการทำกิจกรรมต่างๆ และเปิดโลกทัศน์ด้านอาชีพ อันนำไปสู่การตั้งเป้าหมายในอนาคต โดยหลังจากจบค่ายในวันนี้จะมีการเก็บข้อมูลอย่างต่อเนื่องหนึ่งเทอมการศึกษา (1 พฤศจิกายน 2560 – 30 มีนาคม 2561)

เด็กนักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 2 และปีที่ 3 จํานวน 43 คน จากโรงเรียนขยายโอกาส 13 แห่งในเขต กทม. ที่มาเข้าค่ายเมื่อวันที่ 2 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา ได้ลองทำกิจกรรมที่กระตุ้นกรอบความคิดแบบเติบโต ซึ่งทีมงานครูทีชฯ ได้วางแผนมาอย่างดีตลอดสองเดือนเต็ม นักเดินทางน้อยเริ่มออกเดินทางจากสำนักงานมูลนิธิ ทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ ไปยังจุดต่างๆ เพื่อทำ “หกภารกิจ” สุดท้าทาย ที่สวนลุมพินี จามจุรีสแควร์ และจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย

งานนี้เด็ก ๆ ทั้งเดินเท้า โดยสารรถไฟฟ้า MRT และ BTS ซึ่งสำหรับเด็กๆ ส่วนมากแล้ว นี่คือครั้งแรกที่พวกเขาได้ใช้บริการ MRT และ BTS

แม้จะมีความท้าทายในเรื่องการระดมทุนสนับสนุน การประสานงาน และการจัดสรรเวลาเพื่อเตรียมงาน แต่ครูโด้ ปฐวี เสวกวรรณ์ และครูอาร์ม สุขพิชัย คณะช่าง ครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลงรุ่น 2 หนึ่งในทีมงานค่ายได้เล่าให้เราฟังว่า ในฐานะ “ผู้ให้” พวกเขาก็ได้เป็น “ผู้รับ” ไปพร้อม ๆ กัน ได้ทั้งท้าทายตัวเองให้ออกนอกคอมฟอร์ตโซน ได้ลองทำงานที่ตนไม่เคยทำหรือไม่ถนัด

ได้พัฒนาทักษะด้านการทำงานร่วมกันและการแก้ปัญหาเฉพาะหน้า รวมทั้งได้เรียนรู้ที่จะมอบหมายงานและไว้วางใจกันและกัน ไม่มีคำว่าอาวุโสหรือรุ่น 2 รุ่น 3 เพราะทุกคนคือทีมเดียวกันที่แสดงความคิดเห็นได้

ครูเอ็ม ธนิต แคล้วโยธา ครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลง รุ่น 3 เล่ามุมมองจากการทำค่ายในครั้งนี้ว่า

“การทำค่ายด้วยเงินสามหมื่นบาทมันคุ้มค่ามากๆ สามหมื่นบาทไม่ใช่เงินที่มากมาย แต่ผลที่เกิดขึ้น หากฟังจากการสะท้อนของเด็กๆ แล้วจะรู้ว่ามันดีมากๆ มีเด็กคนหนึ่งที่บอกว่า นี่คือครั้งแรกที่เขาได้กินเคเอฟซี ได้ขึ้น MRT เราไม่เคยคิดเลยว่า ค่ายนี้จะเปิดโลกของเด็กคนหนึ่งได้ขนาดนี้ แต่เราได้สร้างโอกาสนั้นจริงๆ มันชัดเจนมากๆ ครับ”

เมื่อสอบถาม ครูมะปราง พุทธชาด ปานรอด ครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลง รุ่น 2 ถึงอุปสรรคหลักๆ ของกิจกรรมวันนี้ นั่นก็คือเรื่องฝนตกแบบไม่ลืมหูลืมตา ครูมะปรางเล่าว่า เรื่องฝนเป็นเรื่องที่คาดกันไว้แล้ว จึงได้เตรียมเสื้อกันฝนมา แต่สิ่งที่เกิดคาดคือ ไม่คิดว่าฝนจะตกหนักจนเกือบต้องล้มเลิกกิจกรรมที่วางไว้ แต่แล้วอุปสรรคก็กลับกลายเป็นเครื่องกระตุ้นกรอบความคิดแบบเติบโตของเด็กๆ แม้พวกเขาจะรู้ดีว่าอาจจะต้องเปียกฝนเฉอะแฉะ แต่การที่รู้สึกว่าตนมี “ภารกิจ” และ “เป้าหมาย” ทำให้เขาเกิดความมุ่งมั่นที่จะทำให้สำเร็จ และมองอุปสรรคเป็นเพียงความท้าทายหนึ่งเท่านั้น

“ก่อนมาค่ายในวันนี้ มีเด็กคนหนึ่งที่ปกติเขาจะไม่ค่อยกล้าทำอะไร ต่อให้มีเป้าหมายก็อาจจะไม่ทำ แต่วันนี้หลังจากลองถามเขาว่า ถ้าเขาเจอเรื่องอื่นๆ ที่เขากลัว หรือคิดว่าตนเองน่าจะทำไม่ได้ แล้วเขาจะทำไหม เขาตอบมาเต็มเสียงว่า ผมจะลองทำ”

กลุ่มเป้าหมายของ Long Dos 2 คือเด็กนักเรียนจากโรงเรียนขยายโอกาสที่ไม่ค่อยได้มีโอกาสออกมาเปิดหูเปิดตาและออกค่ายมากนัก ค่ายนี้จึงเป็นการเปิดโลกของเขาให้ได้มาสัมผัสความเป็นจริงทั้งดีและร้าย

“เขาได้มาสัมผัสความแตกต่างและความเหลื่อมล้ำต่างๆ ของชีวิต เรามักจะพูดกันว่า ทุกคนต้องพยายามนะ เพราะ Gap ของเธอมันห่างจากคนส่วนใหญ่อย่างมาก แต่เด็กๆ เขาไม่สามารถมองออกได้ เพราะเขาอยู่ที่เดิม แต่วันนี้เขาออกมาแล้ว เขารู้แล้วว่าทุกคนขึ้นบีทีเอสเป็น แต่เขาขึ้นไม่เป็น เขารู้แล้วว่าทุกคนซื้อของกินนี้ได้ในราคาสองร้อยบาท แต่เขาซื้อไม่ได้ เขารู้แล้วว่าเขายังทำอะไรไม่ได้อีกหลายอย่าง และถ้าเขาอยากได้ เขาจะต้องพัฒนาตนเอง และการศึกษาคือทางออกหนึ่งที่จะทำให้เขามาอยู่ตรงนี้ได้” ครูเอ็มบอกกับเรา

การให้เด็กๆ ได้ออกมาสู่บริบทที่ไม่คุ้นเคย ทำให้พวกเขาเกิดความอยากรู้อยากเห็น จนเป็นที่สังเกตว่า ครูแทบจะไม่ต้องตั้งคำถามอะไรเลย แต่เด็กๆ จะผลัดกันตั้งคำถามเอง และด้วยความไม่คุ้นเคยกับสถานที่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น BTS MRT หรือที่ห้างสรรพสินค้า และมหาวิทยาลัย เด็กๆ จะคอยสังเกตว่าเขาจะต้องทำตัวอย่างไร นั่นคือสาเหตุที่กิจกรรมในวันนี้ ครูได้เปิดโอกาสให้เด็กๆ ได้เป็นคนตัดสินใจเอง ทั้งเรื่องการค้นหาเส้นทาง การตั้งคำถามสัมภาษณ์พี่ๆ นิสิตจุฬาฯ การเลือกซื้อของ ฯลฯ เพื่อจุดประกายให้เขารู้สึกว่า “ทำได้” และเกิดความภูมิใจในตัวเอง ก่อเกิดทักษะทั้งด้านการสื่อสาร การแสดงออก การเข้าสังคม และการตกตะกอนทางความคิด

การสานต่อกิจกรรม Long Dos 2

คำถามนี้คงไม่มีใครตอบได้ดีเท่าเด็กๆ และแน่นอนว่าทุกคนตะโกนเป็นเสียงเดียวกันว่า “อยากมาอีก” เพราะสำหรับหลายๆ คนแล้ว นี่คือ “ครั้งแรก” ที่ได้พบและทำกิจกรรมกับเพื่อนใหม่จากต่างโรงเรียน ครั้งแรกที่ได้ขึ้น BTS และ MRT ครั้งแรกที่ได้รู้ว่าไก่เคเอฟซีมีรสชาติเป็นอย่างไร ครั้งแรกที่ได้รู้ว่าตนเองอยากเรียนต่อคณะอะไร ครั้งแรกที่รู้ว่า “ความฝัน” เริ่มต้นที่จุดไหน และต้องทำอย่างไรถึงจะไปถึง

“ต่อให้ค่ายนี้รับเด็กได้แค่ 40 คนหรือกี่คนก็ตาม แต่สำหรับเด็กที่ไม่เคยเกิดแรงบันดาลใจกับอะไรเลย เขาคงหนีไม่พ้นที่จะเติบโตเป็นเส้นตรง และภาพมันคงไม่สวยเท่าภาพที่มีเส้นตวัดไปมาอย่างมีชีวิตชีวา การได้ออกค่ายในวันนี้้จึงเป็นการจุดประกายแรงบันดาลใจให้กับเขา” – ทีมงาน Long Dos 2

จะดีแค่ไหนถ้าเด็กๆ อีกมากมายได้มี “ครั้งแรก” ของหลายๆ สิ่งที่อาจเป็น “ก้าวแรก” สู่อนาคตอันสดใสของพวกเขา ร่วมจุดประกายให้เด็กๆ กล้าคิดกล้าฝันถึงวันที่ดีกว่า ด้วยการศึกษาคุณภาพและกิจกรรมที่ส่งเสริมทักษะจำเป็น หากคุณเชื่อในความสำคัญของก้าวแรก และเชื่อว่าความเปลี่ยนแปลงสร้างได้ด้วยการลงมือทำ เชิญร่วมสนับสนุนให้โครงการดีๆ ที่ริเริ่มและดำเนินการโดยครูผู้นำการเปลี่ยนแปลง ทีช ฟอร์ ไทยแลนด์ ได้รับการสานต่ออย่างยั่งยืน

“มีเด็กคนหนึ่งพอเขารู้ว่าเขาจะมาค่าย เขาจะคอยมาถามว่า ‘ครู.. ผมจะได้ไปจริงๆ ใช่ไหม ผมจะได้เห็นอะไรบ้าง’ เขาเคยบอกครูว่า เขาจำไม่ได้แล้วว่า ครั้งสุดท้ายที่เขาเคยไปเที่ยวคือเมื่อไหร่และที่ไหน”

UPDATE: Impact Report for “Grit to Glitter” (October 2016)

Details : “Grit to Glitter” aims to develop the students’ capabilities by promoting key characteristics: confidence, analytical skills, grit and persistence to face challenges in their lives.

Result : There were a total of 31 students who joined the program. All 31 students showed clear improvement in the key characteristics.

The Impacts on the Students

From the initial primary research by the Teach for Thailand fellows; the students at Thainiyomsongkro School (Bangkaen) do not have clear goals, dreams about their future, nor confidence in themselves. Thus, the “Grit to Glitter” Program was developed to help students grow and learn by getting outside of their comfort zones.

After teaching the first class at school, the Teach for Thailand fellows had observed a significant difference between students who are deemed “diligent” and those who are not. The teachers found that those who are deemed less diligent were being heavily affected by family problems and other existential factors. Thus, the teachers had to find ways to adjust their lessons to suit the needs of all of their students.

The “Glit To Glitter” Program was initiated by Mr.Pattawee Sawaekwan, Ms.Kunaporn Dejarattanawichai, and Ms.Lamin Viriyasiri – with the focus to foster “grit” within the students.

From first contact with the students – it was clear who are the active students and who are not. The difficulty of navigating the various issues affecting the children spurred on the idea of changing the system. Thus, I (Mr. Pattawee) and my fellow Teach for Thailand fellows, were inspired to start the “Grit to Glitter” program, which aims to develop “grit” as a positive personality trait. This trait would be a foundation for the student’s personal achievement and would subsequently align with individual academic achievement.

The program started with the students filling out a “grit” survey, followed by an interview by the 3 teachers from Teach for Thailand. Areas of discussion included: personal goals within 5 years, family relations, and school matters. The program had 31 students participating in the program and they were taken out on field trips and participated in workshops with Chulalongkorn University Students. We hoped that this program would inspire the students to set clearer academic goals and become more motivated about their classes.

Throughout the program journey, we have observed changes within students – both inside and outside the classroom. All the students who joined the “Grit to Glitter” program were more active in their learning. The teachers helped the students on setting life and academic goals through class room activities, but more than that, the program allowed the teachers and students to be able to get to know each other more on a personal level.

We, as teachers, were able to get to know each students personally as well as learn their individual obstacles. For example, one student was living in a broken family, another was abandoned, and some of their parents were incarcerated. Consequently, the majority of these students were either left to live with their grandparents or had to earn a living by working part-time on the weekends. Each student has their own story. We, as teachers, admired our students and we hoped to do more activities to help bring out each student’s full potential, and bringing them one step closer to their goals.

In summary, this program successfully provided these children with clearer goals, both academically and in life. they have clearer goals – both academically and in life.

Short-term & Long-term Impact

After participating in our activity, we have observed more grit among the students and they have set goals and dreams about their future vocation. Overall, we also observed better grades among the 31 students who have attended our activity with the average GPA being 3.54.

For the next semester, we plan to organize various activities to help the students reach their goals, with the focus being on in-the-class-room development. Towards the end of next semester, we will bring students on a field trip to universities in order to encourage learning exchanges between the university students and high school students.

I noticed that when you’re getting on/off the MRT and BTS – you need to follow the rules. Then when I visited the science museum, it was very entertaining. Especially at Dine in the Dark, if I were to wake up one day blind, what would I do? Then I saw the blind people are just like us; they can do everything like us. ABOUT Projct #2 “Grit to Glitter”

The surveys found that currently the students of Thai Niyom Songkhrao School (located in Bangkhen District in Bangkok), lack defined goals, ambitions and self-confidence. Due to the students mostly coming from low-income families and broken homes, they tend to display a below-average academic performance (e.g. some students in Grade 7 are unable to perform 3-digit additions or other simple arithmetic functions).

Initiated by teacher under Teach for Thailand, the “Grit to Glitter” project aims to provide students from low-income families with opportunities to continuously develop their potential.

Project Details

The “Grit to Glitter” project was first developed from the thought that to be a good teacher for “Teach for Thailand”, it is not enough to just be a good teacher within the confines of the classroom. We wanted to create a program that rewards persistence and curiosity in the face of limited opportunity.

This program is not just an excursion for students, but it’s a process that requires students to demonstrate positive thinking throughout the various school terms; serving as an indication of their grit. This is because we believe that grit is an important characteristic to succeed in school, work and modern life. Grit is also what all 3 teachers of the program strive to instill in the students’ minds, both inside and outside the classroom.

We believe that all students can benefit from this program, whether or not they pass the application process. What students will receive is the drive to change themselves from negligent students that cheat or do not turn in assignments, in to good students and good members of society.

Applications are open and have already received great interest from students. We observed that students are now more attentive in class, respects deadlines, and do their own homework – all of which are behaviors that can spark positive change to the lives of hundreds of students.

Project’s Key Objectives

The purpose of the “Grit to Glitter” Project is to provide continuous development for the students’ by encouraging them to dare to think and dream with self-confidence, perseverance and determination to overcome limitations, both personal and social.

To reward students that have displayed effort and determination to attain Academic Achievement, Essential Skills and Character Strength.
To widen the students’ horizons beyond the home, community and school environment.
To encourage perseverance and effort to achieve their individual goals.

The “Grit to Glitter” project hopes to create a positive impact to the education system beyond the school. Your donation will help many students from low socioeconomic backgrounds dare to dream, achieve their goals, and develop a strong sense of perseverance. Our program encourages diligence and grit in our students so that they may overcome their various personal and social limitations. We give them a chance to widen their horizons beyond their local community and school.

Project to raise awareness for students to become active citizens in their own local community

Project Background

When Mr.Nat Pattanasilp, a teacher under the Teach for Thailand project went into the Wat Suttaram and Klongsan community for his teaching program, he quickly noticed that if it wasn’t someone’s personal problem, they didn’t care.

For example, when there is a trash in the middle of the football field, no one sees it as a problem and ignores it. However, when the trash is under their own table, everyone takes care of the trash. If the problem does not affect them personally, then no one volunteers to solve it. Thus, what can we, as teachers do to promote volunteer spirits among students so that they can become active in solving problems, not just his/her own but also the community’s.

It is important to design a project to promote active citizen – with students as the central facilitators, not just the teacher. Thus, the “Finding your voice through lens” project was created so that the students could actively participate in the community.

How will your donation create impact?
For the “Finding your voice through project,” the main goals of the projects are:

Building the volunteering spirit among students so that they can be active citizens and engage with their communities in order to make a difference.
Teaching the students the value of resource management i.e. we use the traditional camera film so that the students can learn to utilize scarce resources.
Encouraging students to create positive change within their community

The Project Details

1. News analysis – Students analyze problems from current events, learning that macro problems can affect them on a personal level. Students can also gain the opportunity to improve their Thai language skills.

2. Community problem identification – Every day during their walk home from school, the students are to take notice of the surrounding environment and identify a problem that is relevant to their own community.

3. Understand the problem – Students are encouraged to talk to the people in his/her community in order to understand the root of the problem. By incorporating the community in problem solving decision, students will learn confidence, empathy and respect.

4. Design a framework for a solution – Students will gather in groups to analyze problems from the data they have gathered. They will work on situation analysis, problem prioritization, and the framework from problem solving.

5. Solve the problem with the community – After designing a campaign to tackle the problem, students are to re-visit the community to engage with the community to solve the problem.

6. Show result via before & after postcards – Students are to promote the results of the campaign via postcards that show the “before” problem in the community, and the “after”, when the problem is solved.

7. Postcard exhibition at the school – All postcards will be exhibited at the school in order to build strong relationship between the students and the community at large. By the end of the project, the project has built upon the participating students basic life skills and gives them an opportunity to feel empowered while making a difference in their own community. Moreover, the exhibition is held for the additional purpose of showcasing the hard work of each student to their uninvolved peers.
