Love Wildlife has withdrawn all the fund from our generous donors to support the slow loris project in May 2023.

Any donation made after May 10, 2023 will be allocated to a new wildlife conservation project from Love Wildlife which will be announced on Socialgiver’s platform shortly.

Overview

Even listed as endangered animals, slow loris are subjected to abuse and trafficking in Thailand. Love Wildlife provides a rehabilitation center for rescued slow loris to recover before they are fit enough to return to the wild. Every 220 THB donated, you are providing care for 1 trafficking-rescued Slow Loris for 1 month and supporting slow loris ban.

Problem

Although they are listed as endangered animals and are illegal to be kept domestically, slow loris are highly trafficked for tourism and medicinal purposes in Thailand. Mutilated to look harmless, slow loris are subjected to abuse, which often lead to loss of appetite, splintered teeth, or death.

Love Wildlife Mission

Love Wildlife provides a rehabilitation center for rescued slow loris before they return back to the forest and has advocated against slow loris trafficking. The rehabilitation center provides abundant nutrition, healthcare, habitat, along with caretakers to assist trafficking-rescued slow loris in their recovery. Love Wildlife also employs vets to conduct routine check-ups to ensure that they are well to attaining their wildlife skills which had been stripped off from illegal trading. Update: June 2022

Out of 116 slow loris rescued from trafficking and currently cared for by the Department of National Parks (DNP), we are happy to announce that two slow loris (a couple) are finally prepared to be released back into their homes.

Although only a pair of loris are ready to return back to their habitat, which is a very small number, we must keep in mind that their wildlife survival abilities had been reduced and un-naturally altered to be kept as domestic animals and did not have the ability to survive as wild animals. But we must also be reminded that wildlife animals cannot be owned like domestic animals due to their physical and behavioral preferences that make them naturally more attuned in the wild. Hence, it may take years to re-develop these skills necessary to attain survival skills.

Update: October 2021

Currently, Love WildLife is in charge of taking care of 116 slow lorises in the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation or the DNP. Most of these poor lorises are confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade.

We have the expense in terms of the lorris’ food and the staff’s payment that are needed to cover every single month.

Apart from this, we also intend to release these loris back to their wild habitats. But to do so there are three procedures needed to be followed.

For the first phase, we studied the personality of the lorries and checked up on their health. After that, we trained them in a cage which was full of trees. We tried to simulate the forest environment as much as possible.

For the second phase, it is the releasing of this lovely animal back to the forest where it is controlled strictly by the officials. The loris would be invigilated closely whether they were able to survive in the controlled area safely or not. The watching would be done by the tracking devices which would be attached to the body of the loris. However, in case that we could not purchase these tools, it would be the officers who follow these loris.

If the second step goes well, the third step would be reeling these loris into the big natural forest

So far, we have completed the first phase which is the preparation of these lovely animals for their backing into their wild habitats. The second phase of the study would be focusing on releasing these loris back to the forest. It will take place this October. However, the progress is quite slow as we are not well equipped. We lack the funds to purchase the good quality tracking devices. With your donation, it could help the second phase happen smoothly

In addition to this, Love Wild Life is looking forward to hosting some education programs in the future. These sessions aim to raise people’s awareness about the impacts of illegal wildlife trading.

Update: Love Wildlife Foundation 2020

In 2020, THB200,000 support from Socialgiver was used as an expense to care for the quality of life of the Slow Loris. The expense includes food, medicine, vitamins, facility maintenance, cleaning equipment, and management fee. Love Wild Life has helped over 111 Slow Lorises. We successfully improved their quality of life and well-being. This is to prepare them for the return to nature and create the balance of the ecosystem.

UPDATE: Bangkok Airways Supports Slow Loris Conservation Project

In conjunction with the Love Wildlife Foundation and Socialgiver.com

Bangkok – Recently, Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited led by Mrs. Chanthip Thongkanya, Vice President – Office of President (center) in collaboration with Socialgiver.com, a social enterprise that fundraises for good causes, organized a presentation of fundraising for the Slow Loris Conservation Project to the Wildlife Foundation. The fund amounting to 75,600 Baht was raised through www.socialgiver.com which will be used for medication, nutrition and to provide the most natural habitat for Slow Loris in Thailand.

Mrs. Chanthip Thongkanya, Vice President – Office of President of Bangkok Airways commented that “At Bangkok Airways, we acknowledge our responsibility to the society, to the community and to the environment. Recently, we signed the United for Wildlife Transport Industry Declaration supported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) at Dublin, Ireland to prevent trafficking of illegal wildlife and wildlife products. Thus, we are very pleased to be part of this project that recognizes the need to protect endangered species, especially Slow Loris. This support aims to improve the lives of Slow Loris in captivity, protecting them from becoming victims of illegal trade & poaching. Bangkok Airways contributed 60 air tickets on three of our exotic routes which were Samui, Sukhothai, and Trat to raise funds on www.socialgiver.com.”

UPDATE: Love Wildlife Foundation joins Socialgiver at the Good Sharing Expo 2017 (June 9-11, 2017)

Love Wildlife Foundation brings the team to the Good Sharing Expo 2017 at Central World.

“Good Society Expo” was developed from the Sharing Society Festival (Khon Thai Khor Mue Noi), which was originated based on the fact from several types of research, including “Khon Thai Monitor”, that a large amount of Thais are prompt to join social activities but do not know where or how to start. The main purpose of the expo, the first time of a kind in Thailand, is to strive for results by collaborating among networks in the various areas of social movement and the general public. This is to confirm that everyone can be the “Active Citizen” in helping tackle social issues.

The “Good Society Expo” is a collaboration of more than 50 social organizations including Socialgiver. Of which, Love Wildlife Foundation joins the booth to raise awareness for the project as well as fundraise for the cause via selling their merchandise and charity games.

From the 3 days event, Love Wildlife Foundation was able to raise 3,430 Baht.

Where Socialgiver’s Fund Went To

On October 28, 2016, Love Wildlife Foundation received a fund of THB 70,000.00 (Seventy Thousand Thai Baht) from Socialgiver for our slow loris conservation program. The fund has enabled us to provide further care and management of confiscated and donated slow lorises at our facilities at the Bangphra Waterbird Breeding Center. The fund has been distributed to the following expenses:

(1) Microchips and Microchip Reader are important in helping us identify animals that may have health issues and allow us to keep good health records for a large number of slow lorises in our care. We chose the smallest needles possible in order to minimize the pain of inserting the microchips into these small creatures. A request has been sent to the DNP for an overall health check and insertion of microchips by the DNP vets, whereby we are waiting for the confirmation of our proposed dates (December 6 – 9, 2016).

(2) Powdered Gum is a necessary part of the slow loris’ daily diet. A purchase of 20 kilograms has been made, which will last approximately 3-4 months for the 69 slow lorises that we currently have.

(3) Personnel: One month of salary for a full-time slow loris caregiver/vet nurse; as the DNP does not provide for these nocturnal animals.

(4) The remaining funds have been allocated to help with the administrative costs of running the program, which covers travel expenses, printing of materials and resources, etc.

UPDATE: Fun Animal Fact

DID YOU KNOW? Slow Loris is the Only Venomous Primate in the World

Though quite common for insects and reptiles, it’s extremely uncommon for mammals to use venom to fend off prey – among other creatures from the Order Primates, Slow Lorises (from Genus Nycticebus) are the only one with a toxic bite!

However, the bite alone is not toxic; their venom is located in the ‘Bracial Gland’ and secretes an exudate with an allergen that will be activated when mixed with saliva, which will help them defend against predators.

To use their toxin, they first start off by raising their arms up high (as illustrated) to lick the toxic gland located on the inner side of their arms called the ‘Bracial Gland’. They usually will then rub this on their head neck, their fur, and on their babies’ fur for protection.

UPDATE: Treating Uon’s Tooth Infection (July 2016)

Thank you Dr. V and the team at the Animal Hospital Klongluang for the great work and help to treat Uon’s tooth infection. Uon has had multiple abscesses due to tooth decay, a common problem in lorises who fall victim of the illegal pet trade.

UPDATE: Foundation’s usage of 35,000 baht raised via Socialgiver

After receiving the payment from Socialgiver, we used most of the funding to set up a proper treatment area in our loris quarantine. We also used the funding to update our refrigerator (for keeping food and medicines), electric fan, medicine shelves and trolleys. Any leftover money went directly to purchasing food, which compromised of shifting from fruits to vegetables to create less problems when eating if their teeth are damage. Lastly, medical equipment was also updated, and extras purchased to help with the care of the animals.

Currently, we have in total of 54 lorises housed at the center, 45 bengals and 9 pygmies. 12 of them are receiving medical treatment at the moment.
