Issue

Thai statistics shows that the leading cause of death in children aged one year and over in Thailand is drowning, translating to nearly 2,650 children a year. And the rate of youth drowning is increasing every year. This is especially true for the rural community at Triam Suksa school in Soi Dao, Chantaburi province on the Thai-Cambodian border where villagers have had to deal with flash floods.

How does the project address the issue?

Swimsafe Sharks is created as the swimming club in the school with the aim to be the drowning prevention centre for the community, especially for the children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Currently, the water safety program encourages community-wide awareness of the problem of youth drowning.

How will your donation create impact?

For every 2,500 baht, you can help provide children in Chantaburi with swimming lessons & aids to prevent drowning

The Swimsafe Shark has been working with 3 other schools in Chantaburi province. They currently have 776 students aged between 3-11 year old in the swimming program under the guidance of 15 swimming instructors.

For every baht of your contribution to Swimsafe Sharks, your donation will help support the expenses for swimming aids: 1 swimfin (1,500 baht), 1 kickboard (200 baht), 1 life jacket (250 baht) and 1 swimsuit (550 baht) = totals 2,500 baht.

On 7^th March 2017: Improvements to the pool at Viriyalai school in Thapsai, Chanthaburi. This includes a roof, changing facilities, walkways, seating, showers, and a store room.

On 25^th February 2017: ‘Teacher training for teaching children’ in 9 schools the survival swimming curriculum in 3-days intensive training programme for lead to teach their students.

The READY.SET.GLOW Spinning for charity was a success!

We had 27 people joining a 50 minute indoor cycling class and we raised a total of 7,087.50 THB for Swimsafe Sharks, which will be included in our current fundraising for Swimsafe Sharks.

Here is a word from Mr. Andrew Stenning, the project owner of Swimsafe Sharks:

“The swim fins have been a great help for teaching the younger children, we now have 35 units which have helped teach around 200 kids, we also have the life jackets which have been a great aid too. I hope that you understand the donation makes a huge difference to our efforts.

The best thing about it was how it impacted on the children, before many were frightened of the water, and now they love it. The shark fins make it fun and easy to learn. They have also come in useful for the 6 to 12 age group, who also love to use the swim fins. The most important thing to remember with Thailand’s drowning figures is children are learning to swim, this is the biggest impact as it really pleases both the parents and the teachers.”

UPDATE – July 2015

The children in the Swimsafe Sharks project have had water safety classroom instruction this week – They are also going to design and create a poster on the subject.
