Problem

Unacknowledged about health risks associated with sanitation and hygiene, youths in underserved areas are at risk of catching an illness that may bring their overall health to a decline.

Sati Foundation Mission

Sati Foundation wants to improve health care and education quality in underserved areas of Thailand through introducing preventive health care workshops to low income, at-risk youths.

Founded in 2013, Sati Foundation organizes health care workshops for various groups of youths in underserved schools, ranging from schools in higher grounds to juvenile centers. The workshops encompass sanitation, nutrition, and hygiene to occupational training and career counseling.

Update: September 2023

In Chiang Mai this past week to run our mental health and sex education programs. In addition we also launched our new skateboarding program in collaboration with Preduce Skate School and The Skate Room! Most of these kids have never skated or even seen a board before. In addition to learning a new skill there was a focus on being mindful on the board and focusing on the moment, often in life you will fall down and have to learn to get up. Thank you to our wonderful team and supporters!

Update: August 2022

Although the Covid-19 situation has subsided, the impact of the pandemic has induced a global economic recession, not only instigating widespread health deterioration but scarring especially on those who had struggled financially even prior to the illness. Currently, there are two issues that SATI chooses to concentrate on:

Early Marriage

Alleviating family burden and increasing in-house financial stability under the Covid pressure, families are sending their daughters for earlier marriages. Daughters who are under 18 were halted from further education and are taken out from schools and placed into households as housewives; they have no choice to decide their future but need to take responsibility over their household and support their husband’s works.

With lack of knowledge related to sex, young wives are facing a sexual predicament; they have no idea what menstrual cycle or safe sex is. Those who have heard about condoms or menstrual pads may view them as a taboo and may refuse to use them, resulting in a number of unexpected pregnancies and miscarriages that may lead to their mental downfall.

Mae Samoeng Sex Education Workshop – August 2022

Of many communities that have been affected by the pandemic situation, the hill tribes faced a drastic reduction in the number of their export of goods, resulting in an accelerated number of families who marry their underage daughters off to sustain their household finances.

Although underage marriage is inevitable and cannot be made to stop due to economic struggle and long-standing early marriage tradition, we believe that it is best that young wives be well-informed about sex topics. Currently, we are planning for our sex education workshop for hill tribe communities in Amphoe (district) Mae Samoeng. Our pilot event will invite sexual health staffs and medical experts to speak and discuss topics related to safe sex, sexual diseases, women health and menstrual cycle with provisions of biodegradable menstrual pads for hill tribe women.

Juvenile and Crime

An increasing number of juveniles in Thailand are facing destitution due to the economic recession, thereby disabling them from the educational system while increasing their predisposition to crime and misconduct which have become more prevalent in their community.

Vocational and Skills Training Workshop for Juveniles – TBD

Ostracized from the education system with a trampling financial situation places no doubt that there is an increase in the number of juveniles that are involved in criminal activity. In reality, underprivileged juveniles have no other choices than to seek work that may not pay them well enough to sustain their daily necessities.

While the pandemic has taken a toll on every single one of us, it is not only the doctors who face challenges but also those in the vulnerable side of the society who are forgotten and left abandoned due to their lesser involvement with global illness.

For these reasons, SATI foundation has decided to launch a vocational program for underprivileged juveniles and to form a community of those who are looking to better their lives. At this moment, our team is currently designing which classes match with what may be potential for juveniles to choose for their future career. Our pilot program will be launched at the juvenile center to aid those who are the most in need for skill sets. We also plan to create a back-end application for juveniles to communicate with one another.
