Overview

The Big Trees Foundation, the Thai Arborist Association, the Restart Academy, Nonthaburi Provincial Prison, and Socialgiver have come together to launch a program offering arborist training to inmates and former offenders. This initiative aims to create sustainable career opportunities, paving the way for a productive and positive future for these individuals.

Problem

Many inmates and ex-offenders face unemployment due to societal rejection, leading to reoffending. To combat this, our partners are providing arborist training to equip them with skills for sustainable careers and smoother reintegration into society.

Mission

From September 9-13, 2024, a comprehensive arborist training program will be held at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison and the Department of Corrections. This intensive course, both theoretical and practical, will train around 100 participants in arboriculture. Professional arborists and the Restart Academy will offer ongoing mentorship to ensure the trainees can apply their new skills to earn a livelihood.

The Arborist Vocational Training Program provides skill-building workshops for inmates and ex-offenders, offering monthly 1-day practical sessions throughout 2025.

Workshop 1: Gardening, tree care, and soil preparation

Workshop 2: Plant propagation techniques

Workshop 3: Basic plant disease and pest diagnosis

Each session hosts around 30 participants, with a core group attending regularly and 5–10 new participants rotating in each month.

‘Arborist Restart: New Day, New Tree’ – Moving Forward with the Arborist Training Program for Inmates and Ex-Offenders:

This year, ‘Arborist Restart: New Day, New Tree’ returns with a continued learning and career-building workshop. It offers new opportunities for individuals from Nonthaburi Provincial Prison to gain hands-on skills in large tree care and pave their way toward a sustainable career as certified arborists.

The program continues to focus on transforming lives through practical training, environmental stewardship, and social reintegration. It is driven by the belief that every second chance has the power to change society for the better.

September 9-13, 2024: Arborist Training for Inmates. From September 9-13, 2024, a hands-on arborist training workshop will be held at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison and the Department of Corrections. This 5-day workshop will teach inmates essential tree care and basic gardening skills.

The training helps build confidence and provides career opportunities for inmates and ex-offenders, allowing them to earn an income and contribute to a safer society in the long term.

By offering this training, we are creating a skilled workforce and supporting inmates’ reintegration into society. Everyone makes mistakes, and forgiveness opens doors to new opportunities.

This program is a chance for them to start again with hope.
